Eric Dobbins presents: All Are Cool Here

This Friday, UCP studio resident Eric Dobbins invites you behind the curtain… welp, a couple of old quilts actually! While he puts the finishing touches on his “Diamond Man Orange & the Fancy Dance” mural, you’ll be invited to play some ping pong, listen to records, have a cold one and explore some of the process behind his work.

Four-color CMYK screen prints of the image above will be available for the interested, while statement, process work and further mock ups of the images below will be exhibited.

Gamelan Genta Kasturi continues work…

Gamelan Genta Kasturi continues their twice weekly rehearsal schedule at City Center Square, working on bringing new members Alex Smith and Shawn Hansen into the fold.    Member Julian Schempf is successfully making the transition to playing the more difficult gangsa parts, having already gotten Joged, Siwa Natha, Puspanjali, Blossoming Dance and Gilak Walipraja under his belt.  This is often a hard transition and Julian has handled it with great success.  The group has also been learning a Kreasi Baru (new creation) Beleganjur by Patrick Alonzo Conway.  Beleganjur is a mobile percussion style that traditionally accompanies cremation rituals and serves to scare off evil spirits from places like crossroads.  We are also working on a fall concert at a venue TBA and organizing a 10th Anniversary Concert for early June, hopefully bringing our teacher, I Ketút Gedé Asnawa, and family from Univ of Ill, Urbana-Champaign, to accompany us in a retrospective of traditional Balinese repertoire plus new compositions by various group members.  Collaboration with shadow image artist Nihan Yesil is slated for this performance.

Residents Visit Each Other’s Studios

Before the May open studios weekend several residents got together with co-director, Kate Hackman, to see what other residents were up to before the busy weekend.

Molly Kaderka and Jaclyn Senne used a spare room at Town Pavilion to curate a show of resident’s work.

Gamelan Genta Kasturi and Blackhouse Improvisors Collective Concert May 18

Gamelan Genta Kasturi and Blackhouse Improvisors Collective have been hard at work since March working on material for our collaborative concert this Friday evening at 8pm on the 5th floor of City Center Square as part of Charlotte Street Foundation/Urban Culture Project Biannual Open Studios.  The program includes new compositions by Hunter Long, Russell Thorpe, Patrick Alonzo Conway, Teri Ann Quinn, Mary Huntimer and Chris Robinson that fuse the traditional Balinese Gamelan orchestra with a large ensemble of winds that includes Tuba, Euphonium, Trombone, Trumpet, Saxophones and Clarinets.  All this plus a rhythm section of Bass, Drums and Organ!  It is quite a sound.  We have had a great time bringing this show to life.  Additionally, Justin Hundley and Xochitl Rodriguez will improv dance to the Gamelan only composition “Masked Dance” from “Angels & Demons at Play” by Patrick Alonzo Conway.Image
