The ensemble has been actively updating repertoire in our “book” of tunes available for various performances and also creating new music for a collaboration with the duo Nagual for the Black Lab Performance Series held at Paragraph Gallery.
We began this process in the summer by re-introducing a composition by our teacher, I Ketút Gedé Asnawa, that was composed for the group early in his residency entitled Gita Genta Kasturi.
This work was incorporated in an hour-long performance curated by ensemble member Shawn Hansen in collaboration with visiting artists Nagual, primarily a guitar duo, that occurred on Oct 5 at the Paragraph Gallery. This performance also incorporated “conduction” like textures created and directed by ensemble members Sam Hughes and Wayne Yockey. The inclusion of these improvised textures heralded a new direction in available sonic approaches for the group, since most tradtional gamelan repertoire is highly composed.
Our work since completing this performance has involved primarily re-introducing a standard dance work from Balinese repertoire entitled Oleg Tamulilingan composed by I Wayan Beratha.
We plan to present part of this piece along with a demo for the December 13th Open House event at 5pm in the Black Box on the 6th Floor of Town Pavilion.
Our next concert event will be a small group performance as part of Jazz Winterlude at Johnson County Community College on January 25 at 4pm.
Individual posts will highlight both of these events.

On Saturday August 17, 2013, Gamelan Genta Kasturi was both proud and pleased to support Kansas City’s Indonesian community by providing live music for their dance troupe at the 2013 Ethnic Enrichment Festival at the Swope Park Pavilion. The Indonesian 30-minute presentation began at 7:30 pm and was very well received by the audience, which was said to be the largest number of attendees in the history of the festival. We are very happy to have reconnected with our friends in the Indonesian Community and look forward to future collaborations!
For those of you who are unfamiliar with the event, The Kansas City Ethnic Enrichment Commission states: “For 34 years, the residents of the [KC] metropolitan area and visitors to the midwest celebrate our annual “Taste the World” Festival. This three-day event is one of the largest festivals of its kind in the country and features more than 66 different cultures selling their native foods, crafts and performing ethnic music and dances. Each year, the festival is held during the third full weekend of August near the front entrance of historic Swope Park, Meyer Boulevard and Swope Parkway.”

On the east-facing billboards of Missouri Bank Artboard in the crossroads district of Kansas City, MO, Calder Kamin presents two images titled Invaders (above). Reading right to left, on the first panel features a sparse flock of flying European starlings. These birds represent the first 100 released in Central Park in by Eugene Schieffelin, a drug manufacturer, who hoped to introduce every bird mentioned by Shakespeare to North America. On the second panel the few have flourished into a dense swarm, representative of the masses of starlings we see on our skyline today. After 150 years the European Starling has come to dominate our skies and cities with populations ranging to all parts of the United States. Kamin’s series of invasive species illustrations serve as reminder of how culture, including the behavior and decisions of specific individuals, affect the natural world.
About the Artboards:
An Art through Architecture “Art Achievement” project, the Missouri Bank “Artboards” launched fall 2008, when the building’s existing double-sided billboards were renovated and converted into a highly visible site for work by area artists as part of the bank’s purchase and renovation of the building to house its Crossroads Branch, completed by Helix Architecture + Design. Art through Architecture, a partnership of Charlotte Street Foundation and American Institute of Architects-Kansas City, administers the programming of the Artboards in collaboration with a panel of Missouri Bank representatives.
Art through Architecture (AtA) is designed to encourage collecting and commissioning work by Kansas City area artists through architectural practice. Through AtA, new architectural projects may earn Gold, Silver or Bronze levels of Art Achievement by dedicating a percentage of the total construction budget to collecting artworks, commissioning temporary or permanent artworks, and/or including artists on design teams.

Skye Livingston, Dapple, 2013
Citrus Paradisi: of flesh & skin is an experimental exhibition by Skye Livingston exploring the idea of healing oneself, focusing on the elements of nourishment, tension and fragility. At the heart of this exhibition lies the grapefruit, utilized by Livingston as a metaphor for the human body. Large-scale digital prints of grapefruit skin, juxtaposed by various grapefruit edibles provide viewers with a hands-on experience. Citrus Paradisi: of flesh & skin was partially funded by an Inspiration Grant from ArtsKC.
ABOUT SKYE LIVINGSTON:
Skye Livingston is a current resident of the Charlotte Street Foundation’s Urban Culture Project studios, in downtown Kansas City. She graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 2012, where she studied fiber and art history. It is a way to trace the past through the present, an action of wandering and contemplation; a routine that comes from curiosity spilled from observation. WALKABOUT is about losing a previous structure in order to create your own. The means in which you do so is indescribable.

WALKABOUT is a mutual exploration on the part of maker and the viewer. The artist neglects a prescribed path to create their own direction through manipulated space, constructed images, and material exploration. The artists extend beyond formative impulses to create new worlds for the viewer to experience their own WALKABOUT.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
All five artists in WALKABOUT are recent graduates from the Kansas City Art Institute, class of 2012, and current residents at the Charlotte Street Foundation’s Urban Culture Project Studio Residency. The artists come from different backgrounds, but are temporarily working together at this time and place. Each artist has maintained a steady and unique momentum, exhibiting work and remaining highly active within and outside of the Kansas City arts community. By leaving the safe ground of accepted conventions each artist has been able to explore their own path and establish their own identity.

With Flannigan’s Right Hook
May and June First Friday in the Kansas City Crossroads District
The 2013 Song and Dance Project is a captivating collaborative performance between Kacico Dance and Kansas City Irish Band, Flannigan’s Right Hook. Five out of seven company dancers have created new and innovative choreography to covered and original songs by Flannigan’s. They will perform an hour long concert, live, during May and June First Friday’s celebration in the Kansas City Crossroads District. The Song and Dance Project continues Kacico’s tradition of interdisciplinary collaboration offering opportunities to talented performance artists in the greater Kansas City area.

ABOUT KACICO DANCE
Kacico Dance is a professional nonprofit contemporary dance company from Kansas City, Missouri under the co-artistic direction of Allison McKinzie, Holly Noel Harmison, and Maggie Osgood Nicholls. These three artists are dedicated to preserving and developing the artistic excellence of the company. Kacico creates and maintains a diverse dance repertory facilitated by artistic skill, knowledge, creative questioning, experimentation, and collaboration. The company perpetuates the existence, exploration, and education of modern dance and its developmental forms. ABOUT FLANNIGAN’S RIGHT HOOK
Flannigan’s Right Hook is a Kansas City band with Irish, Rock, and Folk influences. Band members Cameron Russell, Shane Borth and Michael Cochran started the band in 2006. Current play lists by the boys include classic Irish standards – ballads and tunes – and also a whole slew of songs from the world of American country music, classic tracks, bluegrass, as well as original compositions and songs. You can hear Flannigan’s Right Hook at several establishments across the Kansas City Metro area.
